This week we will be focusing on plural endings. We will be using this list of spelling words to help us decide when we add -s, -es, or "change the y to i and add es". Your child will learn that the letter at the end of the word root, will help them decide which ending is appropriate.
We will find out that most words are pluralized by adding an "s" to the end. (dogs, books, foods) However, nouns which end in s, z, ch, sh, and x, need to have an "es" added to them, to make pronouncing them easier. (buses, buzzes, churches, crashes, boxes) Words that end in "y", where the "y" says /eeeee/ will usually have the "y" changed to "i" and "es" will be added to the end. (babies, mysteries). We don't have any "exceptions to the rules" this week.
Please do not "preteach" the words that are on this list. I would like to see what their knowledge is on Wednesday during the pre-test and how it improves over the week. You may begin practicing the words when the pre-test comes home on Wednesday evening.
